TRACE Ballistics Chamber Deployed in Antigua and Barbuda: Building a Caribbean Forensic Hub

Antigua and Barbuda is taking a major step toward becoming a regional leader in forensic science. With the deployment of the TRACE Ballistics Chamber, the Antigua and Barbuda Forensic Services (ABFS) is advancing its mission to build a world-class forensic laboratory in the Caribbean.

A National Vision for Forensic Excellence

This initiative reflects a broader national strategy led by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, under the leadership and guidance of Attorney General and Minister of Public Safety, the Honorable Sir Steadroy Benjamin.

The objective is clear: to position Antigua and Barbuda as the forensic hub of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). As recently reported, the facility is expected to be fully operational by 2026, strengthening regional capabilities in forensic science and criminal investigations.

Building Real Forensic Capability

Under the leadership of Michael Murrell, MSc, BSc (Hons), MCSFS, Forensic Director, ABFS is investing in long-term capability development.

Key initiatives include:

  • Six forensic professionals currently undergoing 18 months of specialized ballistic forensics training
  • Expansion of forensic disciplines including chemistry and firearms examination

This is not just infrastructure — it is a strategic investment in expertise, accuracy, and justice.

Advancing Ballistic Testing with TRACE

Ballistic evidence plays a critical role in modern investigations. The TRACE Ballistics Chamber supports ABFS by enabling:

  • Safe and controlled bullet recovery
  • Preservation of ballistic markings for accurate comparison
  • Reliable firearm identification processes
  • Improved workflow efficiency for forensic examiners

These capabilities directly contribute to stronger casework, more reliable convictions, and the protection of the innocent.

International Collaboration and Training

In parallel with these advancements, Antigua and Barbuda is hosting international training efforts.

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) is currently conducting an Introduction to Comparison Microscopy Workshop.

Participants are gaining hands-on experience in:

  • Firearms examination fundamentals
  • Ammunition separation techniques
  • Test firing preparation
  • Microscopic comparison and analysis

These are essential skills that support evidence-based investigations and strengthen forensic standards across the region.

A Growing Forensic Ecosystem

The TRACE Ballistics Chamber is now part of a growing and evolving forensic ecosystem in Antigua and Barbuda.

With support from both the Antigua and Barbuda Forensic Services (ABFS) and the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF), the system is contributing to:

  • Enhanced ballistic testing capabilities
  • Training and development of forensic personnel
  • Operational readiness of the new facility

What This Means for Other Agencies

This deployment highlights a clear trend: forward-thinking agencies are investing in modern ballistic recovery systems to improve accuracy, safety, and efficiency.

If your agency is building a new forensic lab, upgrading outdated equipment, or expanding ballistic testing capabilities, selecting the right recovery system is critical.
